Surviving the Candida diet over the Christmas holidays

I am possibly the most crazy person around the Christmas feast…

Who decides to go on a super restrictive candida diet right before Christmas? Crazy people.. like me!
My tips on surviving the Candida diet over the Christmas holidays.

What is Candida?

In short, it’s a yeast that chills out in our insides, usually mostly in the intestines and if ‘over fed’ it starts to think it runs the place and causes all kinds of havoc.

How did I get it?

Well everyone has a little bit, it lives alongside the good bacteria. However there are a few things that help candida to thrive – sugar, alcohol, carbohydrates, antibiotics and even the contraceptive pill.

So what?

So if it gets a bit cocky it can start to give you some pretty unpleasant symptoms such as:

  • Athletes foot and other fungal infections
  • Thrush and other itches
  • Troubles with digestion – bloating and toilet troubles
  • Skin issues, rashes and other icky things
  • Sugar and carb cravings like there is no tomorrow
  • Mood swings!!

For me – crazy cravings, moodiness, and fungal rashes. Not cool.

So what can you do about it?

The bad news is that it can be a pretty tough little bugger to kill off. You have to starve it. And that means eating a super strict diet that essentially does not contain sugar, carbs, starch, gluten, dairy or alcohol.

The good news is that broccoli, kale, coconut oil and garlic are all awesome for helping to get rid of it. So I get to eat most of my favourite foods every day!
There is no set timeframe for how long you need to stay on the diet, I have found stories of people who did it for a few months vs a few years.

I am aiming for 3 months.

Once the candida starts to starve and die off it can get really nasty. Its known to releases toxins into the body that cause all kinds of nasty symptoms. (something to look forward to!)

  • Nausea, headaches and dizziness
  • Swollen glands and compromised immune system
  • Rashes, sweats an breakouts
  • Thrush
  • Sinus infections


I am about to jump into my third week on the diet. So far so good.

I am passed the initial sugar withdrawal phase and have lost a couple of kilos that were following me around.
People keep asking me if I’m starting to feel better? Truth be told I feel mostly the same, however there are a few big differences that might surprise you.

How I’m feeling:

Tired. Tired all the time.

Skinny. I seem to be losing weight which is ok with me, as long as its not too much.

My glands keep getting sore and I get dizzy allot.

Keeping snacks and foods available requires a butt load of effort and when you are tired it can be hard work. I pretty much cant eat anything that comes in a packet so I’m doing allot more cooking.

I feel like I have to clean my kitchen a whole heap more. Cooking everything from scratch can be messy (but delicious).

Things I have learnt (so far):

To be grateful for the food that I can eat, the food that nourishes and heals my body. I am grateful that i have a choice to heal myself with food. I am grateful that I can buy the food, cook the food and I am grateful that it tastes amazing. I am grateful that I have a place to cook and share a meal with my husband. And I am grateful that he is supportive of my diet.
I have started to put more of an emphasis on this when I cook and eat, almost like saying grace.

I find I am not hungry as often and you can pretty much eat anything in front of me without me feeling jealous (seems it makes others more uncomfortable than it does me – people keep apologising to me before they eat in front of me which is kind of sweet).

It’s not the end of the world to not eat what everyone else is eating. Since it’s the holiday season I have been to several different social events already where I could not eat anything. But I am prepared and have candida safe snacks and tea ready!

You don’t have to eat it just because it’s there. How often do you do this? Not even hungry but it’s there so you eat it. Not anymore! If I’m full, then I’m full. If I want to eat it then I eat it, but if I don’t, then I don’t. (most of the time)

Herbs and spices are the most amazing addition to a restrictive diet EVER! You can jazz up anything with some good quality herbs and spices. Feeling restricted in what I can eat was blown away when I realised the amazing herbs and spices you can add to anything. I am learning to cook more creatively and intuitively and my taste buds are in heaven.

Rest. You need to rest to heal, it is important.

So thats it in a nutshell for today. I will keep you updated as i progress throughout my diet in the coming weeks.
